At the meeting of the NATO defense ministers held in Brussels on Thursday, 5. June 2025. years, an agreement was reached on the ambitious new set of goals for the development of the Alliance military capabilities.
These goals aim to build stronger, fairer and killer alliance, with securing full combat readiness for next year.
At the Final Media Conference, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte confirmed that these goals “precisely relate to the abilities in which allies must invest in the coming years … to protect our deterrents and defend.
These goals form the basis of the new Defense Investment Plan, which should be adopted at the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague. According to the proposal, the allies should allocate 5% of the Defense GDP – including 3.5% for the basic costs of military consumption and additional 1.5% of GDP per year for security infrastructure and resistance.
On the same day, the meeting of the NATO-Ukraine council was held, in which the Secretary of the Defense of Ukraine, Rustem Moderners and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas was held. After the meeting, the Secretary-General reaffirmed the strong support of Ukraine, stating that the Allies promised more than 20 billion euros of additional security assistance. He also welcomed additional promises to help the given day earlier at the Meeting of the Contact Group for Defense of Ukraine.
At the last meeting of the Ministerostic, the regular meeting of the NATO nuclear Staff was held. “Nuclear deterrence remains the foundation of the Alliance’s security,” Rutte emphasized. “We will ensure that NATO nuclear abilities remain strong and efficient, in order to preserve peace, prevent coercion and deterred aggression.”
