Scottish tennis player Andy Murray said that his six-month engagement in Novak Djokovic’s coaching team was a valuable experience, despite the disappointing end and the fact that no trophy was won during that period.
Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray joined Djokovic’s team last November, but they ended their collaboration after just six months, in May this year, just before Roland Garros.
– When I look back, I’m glad I did it. I was completely dedicated to work. Before I accepted the job, I had arranged a skiing holiday and I explained that to Djokovic. “During my vacation, I was watching tapes of his matches in Australia at 11 p.m., editing the videos to send them to him,” Murray told the “Athletica” tennis podcast.
Under his leadership, Djokovic defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, but due to a hamstring injury, he lost the semifinal match to Alexander Zverev after one set.
– He played incredible tennis in Australia, it’s a shame he got injured – said Murray. He added that difficult months followed and admitted that they did not achieve the results he expected.
– After the injury, a difficult period followed for him, but also for the entire team. Of course I was disappointed, I didn’t get the results I wanted – said Murray.
The Scot said that he is open to new coaching challenges, with the experience he gained coaching Djokovic.
– I think it is very important that the coach brings good energy. If I become a coach again, it is something that I will work on and try to be better – added the 38-year-old tennis player.
