Portuguese football expert Jose Mourinho has filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights for violating the right to freedom of expression while managing Turkish club Fenerbahce.
Lawsuit to the European Court of Human Rights it was submitted in March 2025, almost six months before Fenerbahce sacked him after failing to qualify for the Champions League, reports Hina agency.
Mourinho filed the lawsuit because disciplinary sanctions which he uttered to him Turkish Football Association due to unsportsmanlike conduct.
The remarks he made about the rival team’s fans and Turkish referees in November 2024 were controversial, resulting in a one-match ban and two fines of approx. $21,000.
Mourinho calls for freedom of expression
According to Article 6 of the European Convention, “the applicant complains that the dispute in question was not resolved by an independent and impartial court”, the document states. of the European Court of Human Rights from May 13.
The federation fined Mourinho for unsportsmanlike behavior towards rival fans during the match and for subsequent comments in the media, in which he criticized the refereeing standards after Fenerbahçe’s defeat by Trabzonspor with the result 2:3.
Trabzonspor were awarded two penalties in the second half after VAR interventions, and with the score 2:2, Mourinho was furious because a foul on one of his players was not sanctioned.

The Turkish Football Federation announced that Mourinho’s statements “had intention to harm the reputation of TFFdiminish the value of Turkish football, overshadow or discredit the impartiality of referees and other officials of the competition”.
After parting with Fenerbahceafter losing in the Champions League play-offs in August, Mourinho joined the Portuguese giants Benficaand in recent days it has been connected with Real Madrid.
