Hundreds of people are missing after a boat carrying about 300 passengers sank near the Thai-Malaysian border, Malaysian maritime authorities said, Reuters reported.
According to First Admiral Romli Mustafa, director of the maritime agency for the northern Malaysian states of Kedah and Perlis, 10 people have been rescued so far, while one body was found in the sea near the island of Langkawi.
Among the survivors are three men from Myanmar, two Rohingya and one Bangladeshi, while the woman who died was a member of the Rohingya minority, reports the state news agency Bernama.
The ship set sail from Buthidaung in Myanmar, and according to police information, migrants were transferred from a larger ship to three smaller ones during the journey to avoid detection by the authorities.

The fate of two other smaller boats is unknown, and the search and rescue operation is still ongoing, the police said.
Members of the Muslim Rohingya minority often try to escape by sea from Buddhist Myanmar, where they have been subjected to decades of discrimination, violence and denial of citizenship.
