Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok should resign after the formation of a new government, the leader of the Tisza party that won Sunday’s election, Peter Magyar, said ahead of his arrival at the presidential residence on Wednesday.
On his way to a meeting with Sulyok, Magyar told reporters that the Hungarian president must step down after a new government is formed, Reuters reported.
Magyar said he will listen to what the president has to say and convey to him the will of the Hungarian people that he must leave office after a new government is in power, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.
Magyar said that Sulyok is not capable of embodying the unity of the Hungarian nation, is not worthy of being the guardian of the rule of law in Hungary, and is not capable of serving as a moral compass or role model for the Hungarian people.
The Hungarian president is elected by the parliament, and Sulyok was elected in February 2024.
After the meeting, he told reporters that he had called on the president to resign voluntarily, otherwise he would change the constitution.
Sulyok replied that he would consider Magyar’s arguments, Reuters reports.
After the meeting, Magyar said that Sulyok told him that he would give him a mandate to form the government, and that he was planning a parliamentary session in early May.
Magyar expects the new government to be inaugurated during May.
