The initiative “Don’t give hatred a chance” called for the formation of a human chain, and the diocese of Magdeburg also participated in the action. Police said 4,000 people took part. Organizers said people of all ages stood together in dense crowds. They held candles in their hands and clapped and thanked the ambulance.
At the same time, supporters of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) held a rally in the cathedral square, demanding the deportation of migrants.
AfD Vice President Alice Weidel said that people finally want to live in security. Speaking about the perpetrator, she said that anyone who despises the citizens of the country that gave him refuge “does not belong to the country”. Not long after her speech and a minute of silence, the funeral march followed.
The authorities in the state of Saxony-Anhalt Reiner Haseloff warned that the escalation of threats is a consequence of the exploitation of the crime committed at the Christmas market, for which right-wing extremists are responsible. The state network of migrant organizations in the province spoke about the dangerous situation and expressly advises people with migrant origins not to move around the city alone and in the dark.
