The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergey Lavrov, said on Saturday that he is currently working on the order of President Vladimir Putin, which refers to the preparation of a proposal on a potential Russian nuclear test, the state news agency TASS reported.
“Regarding President Vladimir Putin’s instruction from the Security Council meeting held on November 5, I can say that it has been accepted, is ready for implementation and is being worked on. The public will be informed of the results,” Lavrov said, as reported by TASS.
The order comes in response to US President Donald Trump’s surprise announcement last week that the United States plans to restart nuclear testing.
TASS also states that Lavrov said that Russia did not receive any explanation from the US regarding Trump’s order.
Relations between Russia and the US have deteriorated sharply in recent weeks, as Trump, dissatisfied with the lack of progress in efforts to end the war in Ukraine, canceled a planned summit with Putin and imposed new sanctions on Russia for the first time since returning to the White House in January.
