The largest Muslim feast, Kurban-Bajram, also known as Hadži-Bajram, is greeted throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also the entire Islamic world, in the spirit of faith, family closeness and solidarity.
Kurban-Bajram begins 10. Zu-L-Hovjjet, the last month of the Islamic Lunar year, and lasts four days. His meaning is deeply connected to the rite of the Hagj – the Islamic duty that Muslims are performed in the sacred places with the victim of Kurban, which symbolizes the obedience to God and willingness to the victim for the benefit of others.
Rites and customs
The feast begins with Bajram-prayer, which in the mosques slaughter in the morning. Believers are pre-bathing, they dress the most beautiful clothing and go to the mosque – traditionally one way, and returning others, following the recommended sunnight and learning tekbira.
After Bajram-prayer, the Kurban clan approaches, and its meat is divided into three parts: one part for its own needs, others for relatives, neighbors and friends, and third for the poor and those in need. It is important to emphasize that the kuran is divided by the neighbors of other faith, emphasizing the universal values of respect and communion.
Family gatherings and bajramine lunch
Bajram traditionally welcomes in a family circle, with a rich dining. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Bajram lunch usually begins with a soup or soup, followed by meals like Sarma, Dolmi, Bosnian pot, and is unavoidable and baked meat. In the end, traditional sweets are served – Baklava, Ružica, Tufahije, Halva …
It used to be a custom to be a new suit for Bajram, which was waiting for a long time, which had a special emotional value.
Bajram and children – Joy and customs
For the youngest, Bajram represents a particular joy. Kids go around relatives and neighbors, congratulates the holidays kissing older in the hand, and in turn they get bajramluk – money, sweets or symbolic gifts. Customs like donating children, hang out with relatives and friends, and even the so-called. “Women’s Bajrama” – the fourth day reserved for rest and encounters of women – in some ends continue to be kept.

Bajram is also a time in which disagreements are forgotten, renewed family and neighbor connections, and provides the hand of reconciliation.
