Today, we give a recognition of the strength, resistance and leadership of women in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Through generations, the poles of their communities were rebuilt society in times of crisis, protected human rights and shaped democracy. However, despite their invaluable contribution, they continue to face obstacles that limit their fully participation in political, economic and social life.
Women in Bosnia and Herzegovina make up only 24% Selected representatives in parliaments at the state and entity levels, which reduces their impact on decision-making that directly affect their lives. Just 34% of women is employed, while that percentage in men is 59%and still earn 20% less from their male counterparts. Almost half of women (48%) In his life, he experiences some form of gender-based violence. In addition to professional obligations at work, in their homes their work often remains invisible – although they are implementing on average six hours a day worrying about others. These are not only statistics, but a reality that requires emergency and concrete changes.
We are celebrating this year 30 years of Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action -lock global plan to improve women’s rights as well as 25 years from the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. When women are excluded from managerial positions, economy and public life, the progress of the entire society is slowed. Investing in gender equality is not only a matter of righteousness, but the key to achieving the full potential of each society. Real progress requires true commitment.
We invite all actors – government institutions, political leaders, civil society, private sectors and individuals – to take concrete steps to crash the obstacles to gender equality. This includes the consistent application of the law that protects women’s rights, greater economic opportunities for women, providing equal representation in management positions and decision-making, and zero rates of tolerance for gender-based violence.
Gender equality is not just a thorough human right – it is the basis of a just and prosperous society. We still build the path to equality, but we can do it together. Each policy, every investment, every form of action are important. We have the power to build a future in which every woman and girl can progress – without discrimination, violence and inequality. We must not allow another generation waiting for changes.
