The move follows tensions between the two countries over the New Year incident and recent Swiss demands that Italy pay for the treatment of Italians injured in the fire.
The legal proceedings are justified by the significant resources mobilized by the national civil defense to help the Italian victims, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office announced.
It is also based on the exceptional responsibility of Swiss local authorities, which justifies legal action against all responsible parties, the Italian government said in a statement.
Swiss prosecutors launched criminal investigations against the bar’s French owners, as well as a number of local officials, including the mayor of Crans-Montana, who admitted his municipality had failed multiple annual safety checks of the facility.
The Italian ambassador in Switzerland emphasized that Italy treated the Swiss patients injured in Crans-Montana in one of its hospitals and contributed to rescue operations with a helicopter, without asking for money.
