Istanbul will face a big problem this summer

Istanbul could face risks in water supply this summer, due to the insufficient level in the reservoirs, the “Halk” television station announced, referring to the data of the Istanbul Water Supply and Sewerage Administration.

ŽAccording to the Administration’s data, the average filling rate of Istanbul reservoirs was about 72 percent. Experts say that a level of 75-80 percent is preferable for a more stable summer season.

The highest levels were recorded in the reservoirs Elmali, Omerli and Darlik, where the occupancy exceeds 90 percent.

Several reservoirs serving the European side of the city remain significantly lower.

The increase in water reserves has largely stalled in recent days despite rainfall.

Experts warn that hot summer weather and higher evaporation could worsen the supply situation if there is not enough rainfall in the coming weeks.

Istanbul uses more than three million cubic meters of water per day and can no longer rely solely on its own reservoirs.

Much of the supply comes from outside sources, including the Melen and Ješildžaj systems.
