The Rafah crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt will be reopened for limited movement of people, the Israeli army announced through its contact agency COGAT (Coordinator for Government Activities in the Territories).
The crossing, according to the announcement, will be open on Wednesday in both directions, while maintaining the “necessary safety restrictions” for the passage of people. The crossing was closed for almost two years, and before the start of the war it was only open for one month. At the beginning of the conflict, all crossing points into Gaza were temporarily closed.
Before the outbreak of war, Rafah was opened in early February to a limited number of patients from Gaza seeking emergency medical care, with the same small number allowed to return to the enclave. It is still not clear whether the same number of Palestinians will be able to cross the border, or whether the quota will be reduced.
On March 2, COGAT announced the reopening of the Kerem Shalom crossing for humanitarian aid to enter Gaza, while Rafah remained closed.
