The red line refers to the villages along the Israeli-Lebanese border, where most buildings have been destroyed and there are no more Hezbollah fighters. In some places, Israeli ground troops took up fixed positions.
The yellow line extends six to 10 kilometers from the border, and the goal is to prevent shelling of northern Israel, mostly by rockets. The army is still deployed in that zone, and clashes occasionally occur, including in the area of Hezbollah’s Bint Jbeil stronghold.
The third line extends to the Litani River, about 30 kilometers from the border, where Israel wants to maintain control through military force and observation posts.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Israeli military should remain in an “enhanced security zone” in southern Lebanon, about 10 kilometers wide, to protect northern Israel from Hezbollah attacks.
