Israel launched strikes on southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut on Wednesday, Lebanese state media said, while the Hezbollah group said it was continuing to attack Israeli troops.
Lebanon was drawn into the wider conflict in the Middle East when Hezbollah began firing rockets at Israel on March 2, allegedly in response to the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Israel, which held southern Lebanon under occupation for about two decades until 2000, has intensified attacks across Lebanon and deployed ground troops to the country’s south since the new wave of conflict began.

On Tuesday, it was announced that the army would take control of the border area up to the Litani River, about 30 kilometers from the border.
Lebanon’s state news agency (NNA) reported Israeli attacks and artillery shelling at multiple locations in southern Lebanon on Wednesday.
It also said “enemy warplanes… carried out an attack” on Beirut’s southern suburbs, after the Israeli military renewed evacuation warnings for several areas in the Hezbollah stronghold late Tuesday.
An AFP reporter saw a street covered in rubble, including broken concrete and bent metal, while the upper floors of an apartment building were damaged. The area was repeatedly targeted during the conflict and was largely abandoned as residents fled.
Hezbollah said its fighters targeted Israeli troops “deployed in the border towns of Naqura and Qawzah” as well as targets across the border “with more than 100 rockets” on Wednesday.
The statement came after the group previously claimed to have carried out a series of attacks on Israeli troops in southern Lebanon and at locations in northern Israel, where there were no immediate reports of casualties.
Israel’s military said ground troops in southern Lebanon had “destroyed a weapons cache” and that the air force had killed “several terrorists”.
It also said troops “destroyed Hezbollah command centers that housed many weapons,” without specifying the locations.
Lebanese authorities said Israeli strikes in the country’s south killed nine more people on Tuesday, including two in an apartment in the Mieh Mieh Palestinian refugee camp.
According to the authorities, the Israeli campaign in Lebanon has killed more than 1,000 people, while more than a million people have been displaced.
In northern Israel, where air raid sirens and shelters are frequent, a woman was killed after rocket fire from Lebanon, Israeli authorities said.
