Israel announced on Saturday that the war against Iran was entering its “decisive phase” as explosions rocked cities across the Middle East, with attacks on the US embassy in Baghdad and energy facilities in the Gulf.
Black smoke billowed over the US embassy in Iraq, AFP reporters saw, the second time it has been targeted since February 28, when the United States and Israel attacked Iran and plunged the Gulf into a conflict that sent shockwaves through the global economy.
Millions have been displaced by waves of drones, rockets and aerial bombardments, while more than 1,200 people have reportedly been killed in Iran, with little sign of the conflict slowing as it enters its third week.
Clouds of dark black smoke also rose from Fujairah, home to a large storage and export terminal for the Emirate’s oil, on Saturday, shortly after Iran’s military warned UAE civilians to avoid port areas.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the war was entering a “decisive phase”, even as he warned it would “last as long as necessary”.
Yet despite superior American and Israeli firepower, Iran appears determined to continue the fight. It has carried out missile and drone attacks on at least ten of its neighbors and blocked sea traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz.
The Israeli military has warned people in the industrial zone of Tabriz in northern Iran to evacuate, signaling an imminent attack.
