Iran’s national team players, who are still waiting for US visas for the World Cup, have handed in their passports at the US embassy in Turkey, the head of the Iran Football Association announced on Friday.
The World Cup is being held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, however, the United States, where Iran is scheduled to play three group matches, has not yet issued any visas.
On Thursday I spoke to FIFA about US visas. We were asked to all we hand over the passports to the American Embassy in AnkaraTurkey, where the Iranian national team is currently locatedsaid Mehdi Taj.
All passports have been handed overconfirmed the president of the Iranian Football Association, adding that he is waiting “to see what happens on Friday or Saturday at the latest”.
The Iranian national team should fly from Turkey to Spain on Saturday before heading to his training camp in Mexico. Passports are required for these flights.
I think all US visas will be issued and there will be no further problemssaid Mehdi Taj.
Mexico is this week granted visas to Iranians.
Team Melli, as the national team is called in Farsi, is scheduled to play its first game against New Zealand on June 15 in Los Angeles.
They will then face Belgium in Group G on June 21, also in Los Angeles, and Egypt on June 27 in Seattle.
