Iran has started to charge ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes for transporting oil and gas.
According to the analysis of maritime data reported by Lloyd’s List, part of the commercial ships are increasingly using Iranian territorial waters through the so-called “Tehran Toll Corridor”, where Iranian forces stop and inspect vessels, and in some cases charge for passage.
The analysis states that at least two ships have already paid Iran for safe passage, and one of those fees amounted to about two million dollars.
It is a route between the Iranian islands of Qeshm and Larak, which ships use to avoid security risks in the rest of the strait.
According to available data, more than 20 larger vessels have passed through that corridor so far.
Although traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is still reduced due to regional tensions, there has been a slight recovery in recent days.
In a short period of time, at least 16 ships passed through the strait.
