A cargo ship linked to Greece was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz, but it is still unclear whether Iran seized it, Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis said.
Speaking on CNN’s “Connect the World,” Gerapetritis said, “I can confirm that there was an attack on a Greek cargo ship, but I cannot confirm that it was seized by the Iranians.”
He described the situation as “quite worrying” and called on all Greek-owned ships to avoid passing through this key sea route.
– This is a ship under the Liberian flag, owned by Greece, which was trying to leave the Strait of Hormuz – added Gerapetritis.
– We issued a general warning to all Greek-owned ships to be extremely careful, to show maximum restraint and to avoid crossing the strait – he added.
According to Iranian media, the ship was one of three targeted by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Two other ships were seized and diverted into Iranian territorial waters, this formation announced.
