Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski rejected the possibility of forming a common army of the European Union, which would oppose Russian aggression.
As he stated in a conversation for local media, such a concept is not realistic.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Green has issued this idea at the Munich Security Conference, pointing out that Europe needs their own army to defend against Russian threats.
“Many leaders have already spoken about the need for European armed forces. I believe that it was time to create them,” said Green.
Sikorski, however, warned that it was necessary to carefully choose words when it comes to this topic.
“We need to be careful with this term, because people interpret it differently. If the unification of national armies are meant, it will not happen,” the head of Polish diplomacy.
He emphasized, however, to support the strengthening of the EU defense capacity, but not through the creation of a unique army.
The Greensky’s proposal comes at the time the American military assistance in Ukraine weakens, and Kiev hopes that Europe could take a bigger role in support. Sikorski recognized the need to strengthen defense capacities, but points out that Poland would not send troops in Ukraine.
“If the United States wants Europe to strengthen its defense, it should include national components, NATO structures, but also the European component within the EU. We must invest in our defense industry and build the capacities that will make Europe more powerful,” Sikorski said.
Poland, however, remains in the attitude that they will not directly send the army in Ukraine.
