In an attempt to elicit with excessive tourists, Greece introduces a new tax for cruisers on some of the most visited islands.
From 1. July, on the islands Santorini and Mykonos will charge a fee of 20 euros per passenger, British Express writes.
This fee is valid during the rush of the season, between 1. June and 30. September. In other Greek ports, the fee will be 5 euros per passenger.
In the pre-season (April, May), 3 euros will be, while in the Off-season (from 1. October to 31. May) to only 1 euro.
The fee was introduced to mitigate the consequences of mass tourism in Greece, especially on Santorini and Myconos. Last year, for example, during a day on Santorini, as long as 17,000 visitors from the cruiser, which is why the local population was asked to limit its movement.
The Greece National Tourism Organization (GNO) stated that this fee will help “support the infrastructure of the most visited islands in Greece and ensure that local communities are more directly profited by cruisers’ tourism.”
