The German police announced that a man had polished a flammable liquid one woman in the tram in the town of Gera in the east of the country and set fire to it, and then escaped.
The woman was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, the AP agency reported, the Tanjug.
As the police said, no one else was injured in the incident.
Passengers stopped the tram by pressing the emergency button, which the attacker used to escape.
The tram driver immediately turned off the flame, and the 46-year passenger was transferred to the Helicopter Hospital.
The police trace the attacker, and for now, it is not clear what caused the incident, as a kind of flammable liquid was used in the attack.
