Scorers for Julian Nagelsmann’s men were Deniz Undav twice, Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala. This was the last test for the German team at home before going to the USA.
Despite dominating possession, Germany struggled to break through the organized Finnish defense in the first half. After several missed opportunities, the visitors’ resistance was broken by Deniz Undav in the 34th minute, when he headed in Joshua Kimmich’s cross for a 1:0 lead, which was the score with which we went into the break.
In the following, a significantly more determined German team took to the field. Already in the 48th minute, Florian Wirtz made it 2:0 after taking advantage of a mistake by the Finnish defense. The striker of VfB Stuttgart practically solved the question of the winner with his second goal in the 57th minute.
Undav then took advantage of Lennart Karl’s play and calmly checked Lukas Hradecki for 3:0. Not long after the goal, Undav had to leave the game due to a minor injury. The final score was set by Jamal Musiala in the 63rd minute.
By the end of the game, the tempo dropped, and coach Nagelsmann used the opportunity to make numerous changes. The opportunity was given to, among others, Leroy Sané, Nick Woltemade and Nadiem Amiri, who was greeted with ovation at the stadium in his Mainz. Maximilian Beier had the best opportunity for the fifth goal in stoppage time, but his attempts were stopped twice on the goal line itself.
Nagelsmann fielded one of the youngest starting lineups in recent history, with an average age of 26.29. In particular, 18-year-old Lennart Karl stood out, who in his first appearance from the first minute was very agile and registered an assist. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer missed the game due to a slight problem with his calf, so Oliver Baumann was in goal.
