A study by the German Institute for Tourism Research found that 16 percent of 1,124 respondents surveyed between March 25 and 30 had changed their plans for the next three months due to the global political situation.
Among those who changed their plans, 46 percent decided against the trip, and 32 percent had already canceled the trip.
“Going on vacation is not an apolitical thing,” said Julian Reif, the institute’s director, adding that political conditions at a destination are a major component of vacation decisions.
Two-thirds of respondents consider the political conditions at their destination important or very important, and 79 percent said they would avoid destinations with political instability or social unrest, reports Hina.
Director of the German Tourist Board Reinhard Meyer said that the current political situation in the world has an obvious impact on travel plans, at least in the short term. “Our survey clearly shows the uncertainty prevailing among German tourists due to the global crisis and the resulting price increase,” he said.
Despite this, 72 percent of Germans plan to travel on vacation, either domestically or abroad, between April and June, and Bavaria is a popular domestic destination. Spain and Italy lead the table for foreign travel.
