Edin Dzeko did not hide his anger and frustration after Fiorentina’s new defeat, this time at home to Greek AEK in the Conference League.
The experienced striker harshly called out his own fans, telling them to whistle only to avenge the team that is in a deep crisis.
Fiorentina has not won Serie A this season. After a good start in Europe with two wins, bad results followed there as well.
Since Stefano Pioli was fired, there have been back-to-back defeats against Mainz and last night against AEK Athens, which further deepened the crisis in the Florentine club.
“I really didn’t expect this game because we trained well and the coach prepared us tactically. In the first half we were a bit better and we had a goal disallowed. But after they scored, everything became more difficult,” Dzeko told Sky Sport Italia after the 1-0 defeat at the Artemio Franchi Stadium.
The lack of self-confidence in the team is obvious, and Dzeko warns that the fans are only making the situation worse with their behavior.
“You can say that we are bad, that we don’t deserve to wear the shirt, that’s all fine, no problem. However, if we play at home, then we need the fans to help us, not to whistle for every wrong ball. This is not right. If you need to whistle, do it after the final whistle, but during the game we need your support. It’s all true, we’re not playing well, but we still need your help.”
Dzeko explained how the negative atmosphere from the stands directly affects the game, writes Index.
“We can’t connect two or three passes, and that’s not normal for a team like ours. The moment a player makes a mistake and the whistles start, the next time they’ll feel anxious and maybe not try to risk a pass or not want the ball at their feet. That’s when it got harder.”
