French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said in his annual address to French ambassadors on Friday that the European political order is “in danger today”.
– No, European civilization will not disappear. But yes, our political order is in danger today, despite its precious stability in an unpredictable world, despite its enormous scientific, technological, cultural and financial wealth – said Barrot.
The US national security strategy in December, released under President Donald Trump’s administration, described Europe as facing “civilizational wipeout” due to migration and called for “cultivating resilience” among right-wing parties.
– No, Europe is not on the verge of the disappearance of civilization, and the pretentious voices that claim it had better be careful about their own disappearance – said the French minister.
In his opinion, the European Union is “threatened from the outside by opponents who are trying to break the bonds of solidarity that unite us” and “from the inside by democratic exhaustion.”
– Let’s be clear: nothing today guarantees that in 10 years we will live in the European Union as we know it – warned Barrot.
He described the United States as “allies with whom we are not always aligned.”
– Within a few months, the new American administration has decided – and this is its right – to review the ties that connect us. It is also our right to say no to a historical ally, no matter how historical it is, when its proposal is not acceptable and when we have to say no – the French minister added.
