Forty-eight migrant workers from the Indian state of Jharkhand are reportedly trapped in Tunisia, where they claim they are being forced to work without any compensation and in extremely difficult conditions. The workers arrived in the North African country through a private company based in New Delhi, according to Indian media.
According to PTI reports, the Jharkhand Ministry of Labor has established contact with the trapped workers, who have expressed their desire to return to India as soon as possible.
– We spoke with the workers who were allegedly brought to Tunisia by a private company and we are currently checking their documentation. We are also in contact with representatives of the Indian embassy in Tunisia to organize their safe return – said Shikha Lakra, head of the Migrant Control Unit at the Ministry of Labor of Jharkhand.
According to a report by NDTV, the workers claim that they are forced to work long hours without any pay and do not have money even for the basic necessities of life, including food.
Indian authorities are working to verify the documents and circumstances under which the workers went to Tunisia, as well as to ensure their repatriation.
The Ministry of Labor said that the workers will be returned to their country as soon as all administrative procedures and consular checks are completed.
