“We functioned normally until Thursday. On Thursday we had a match in Tabriz against Traktor. We returned to Tehran, the capital, and we functioned most normally that day. On Saturday morning, everything started… We were woken up by rockets. We spent the whole day in the apartment, and then we were given the option to leave the country on Sunday morning together with the players and coaching staff of Persepolis, which is the biggest club in Iran. They are a big club, they have a lot of foreigners and a lot of influence, so organized the bus with them,” began Tomašević’s confession to B92.
He then recounted a traumatic experience traveling by bus through Tehran.
“We, six foreigners from my Gol Gohara club, went with them towards the border with Turkey. But, it already started there… It doesn’t really matter that during the attacks and bombings you sit on a bus, travel and watch from the side whether a rocket will fall or not. Just like we saw rockets. You walk along the road and for two kilometers, you see smoke both left and right and in front of you. A traumatic experience. Rockets were falling everywhere. Tehran is a huge city. You can’t really see directly when something falls. And when you see a fighter plane, you don’t see it very well, it’s certainly too fast, but we saw it, we heard it, it was challenging.
Even up to the border, we were worried whether they would let us out. We traveled for 15 hours, and at the border we had protection because Persepolis is a big club, and we managed to get out, after they first hesitated whether to let us in… There was also a lot of fighting, but we got out of Turkey to a nearby city, and from there we got a plane to Istanbul, and then to our homes,” he pointed out.
He added that he believes the league will not continue.
“We still don’t know what’s happening legally, what’s with our contracts and the like. We don’t have any information. I don’t think the league will continue, but I really don’t know anything. We have yet to see that, to get that information, whether we should look for new clubs or not. We’ll see. The most important thing is that we got away,” Tomašević concluded.
In his career, Tomašević played for Famos, the youth categories of Crvena zvezda and Rada, Lokomotiva from Belgrade, the second team of Rapid, Rudar Velenje, Smederevo, Sloboda, TSC, Tuzla City, Sarajevo, Radnik Surdulica, Sloga and Gol Gohar.
