The NGO FairSquare has filed an official complaint with FIFA’s Ethics Committee against President Gianni Infantino for allegedly violating political neutrality.
The filing also includes a request for an investigation into the awarding of the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to the US president to Donald Trump.
FairSquare claims that Infantino has repeatedly publicly supported Trump’s political moves, including lobbying for the Nobel Peace Prize and publicly expressing support for his policies. The organization believes that such statements I cannot consider it a private view because they were presented in the official capacity of the President of FIFA.
The awarding of the FIFA Peace Prize during the World Cup draw in Washington, where Infantino told Trump that he can always count on his support, is particularly controversial. The filing states that such an act constitutes an open endorsement of Trump’s foreign policy and direct violation of ethical rules.
Human Rights Watch also previously requested an investigation into the manner in which the award was established, warning of the absence of clear criteria and procedures. So far, FIFA has not commented on the accusations, while the entire case came to the public through reporting by The Athletic, reports Gol.hr.
