Fallen government in Romania: The opposition overthrew the prime minister due to austerity measures

The motion of no confidence in the government was submitted by the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR), a far-right populist party, and the Social Democratic Party (PSD), which until recently was part of Bolojan’s coalition, reports HINA.

President Nicușor Dan must now propose a candidate for the position of prime minister. If the parliament rejects two consecutive proposals, he can dissolve the parliament and call early elections.

Dan recently made it clear that he would not nominate a candidate from the “anti-Western” AUR, which is the second largest group in parliament after the PSD.

Bolojan leads the center-right National Liberal Party (PNL).

Bolojan has been in office since June 2025. His main political goal was the recovery of public finances, which had been left in a desperate state by the previous PSD government.

By increasing taxes and canceling subsidies, Bolojan managed to reduce the budget deficit from 9.3 percent of GDP in 2024 to 7.9 percent in 2025.

However, in April, the SPD withdrew its support for the government precisely because of austerity measures.
