Democrats in the US House of Representatives on Thursday failed to pass a resolution that would have limited President Donald Trump’s war powers related to US involvement in the conflict with Iran.
The resolution was rejected by a narrow 213 to 214 vote. The only Republican to vote against the party line was Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, while Democrat Jared Golden of Maine voted against the proposal, CNN reported.
This is the second failed attempt by Democrats to push through a war powers resolution, which would have required Congress to authorize continued US military operations in Iran.
A similar attempt failed in the Senate a day earlier, while the Democrats had previously tried to force the Republicans to consider the proposal through procedural mechanisms.
At the same time, the US and Iran are negotiating a possible deal to end the conflict under a fragile truce, while the US military says forces in the Middle East remain ready to resume combat operations if talks fail.
