Soccer’s World Cup kicks off on Thursday at the iconic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, with expectations that the biggest sporting spectacle on the planet will overcome controversies over high ticket prices, political tension in the United States and the shadow of conflict in the Middle East.
For the first time in history, the tournament will be jointly hosted by three countries, the United States, Canada and Mexico, and a record 48 national teams will participate in the most extensive and complex edition of the World Cup so far.
The match that will open the championship, between Mexico and South Africa, is scheduled for 15:00 local time.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has described the tournament as the biggest show the planet has ever seen, but preparations have been marred by criticism over skyrocketing ticket price inflation.
The most expensive ticket for the final costs $32,970, while tickets for many matches remained available on the secondary markets.
Additional controversies have caused political tensions in the US, including the denial of a visa to Somali referee Omar Artan, and restrictions on some of Iran’s national team personnel.
On the field, the expanded 48-team format brings 104 games, while the July 19 final in New Jersey will also feature an extended halftime for a Super Bowl-style spectacle, featuring performances by Madonna, Shakira and BTS.
