Italian and Spanish authorities, with coordination through Eurojust, have successfully identified and arrested fugitives from Italy linked to a Spanish organized crime group.
The Italian national, who was accused in 2021 of causing grievous bodily harm and carrying a firearm in a public place, evaded the execution of the detention order and has been on the run since then.
Italian authorities issued a European arrest warrant, while Spanish authorities were simultaneously investigating a criminal group that used falsified documents to commit crimes and evade justice.
When it was determined that the members of the group were Italian citizens, complex police and judicial coordination was initiated.
Italy issued arrest warrants and a European Investigation Order, and Eurojust helped coordinate and execute the measures.
The result was the arrest of four people on May 7, 2026, three in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and one in Barcelona, allegedly linked to transnational criminal groups of Italian origin, Eurojust said in a statement.
The searches led to the seizure of several firearms and large quantities of ammunition, narcotics (ecstasy, MDMA, hashish oil, cocaine, marijuana), scales and packaging materials, cash, forged documents and Italian license plates and numerous electronic devices (mobile phones, computers and memory devices).
The process of extradition of the suspects from Spain to Italy is ongoing.
