– The pace at which we are currently moving, the scope of the tasks before us and the number of procedures we have to go through are very significant. Even if a decision were made today on Ukraine’s accession to the EU, it would still require ratification by the parliaments of all EU member states. That alone makes it physically impossible to finish by 2027 – said Klimpus-Tsincadze in an interview for Ukrinform.
She also criticized the idea of setting a specific date for EU accession in a potential peace deal.
– I cannot understand who was guided by what reasons when, during the negotiations between Russia, Ukraine and the United States of America – without the participation of the European Union – they decided to include in the draft peace agreement a provision that does not concern either the USA or Russia, but only Ukraine and the European Union – she said.
In her opinion, this approach is wrong and unfair to Ukraine’s European partners.
– Requiring a specific date belongs to the realm of fantasy – Klimpuš-Tsincadze added.
She noted that EU enlargement procedures were designed for peacetime, not for the current global challenges facing Ukraine and Europe.
However, even if reforms to these procedures were introduced, 2027 would still remain an unrealistic deadline.
– Making such demands is unfair to our European partners and Ukrainian citizens – she said.
As reported, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that it is important for Ukraine to include a specific date of accession to the EU in the future peace agreement in order to ensure clear guarantees and avoid potential obstruction.
According to him, Ukraine could technically be ready for EU membership by 2027.
