Unidentified drones were spotted on Friday night over a military base near Eindhoven, which is used by NATO, the Dutch Ministry of Defense said.
According to reports, military personnel deployed weapons with the intention of shooting down the aircraft, but the drones soon moved away and were no longer seen, the BBC reports. Police are investigating the incident, and officials are not releasing additional information for security reasons, including how the drones got to the base and what measures were taken.
Apart from the Dutch Air Force, the base is also used by a squadron of the US Air Force as part of NATO in Europe.
This is another in a series of similar cases, after drones were spotted over other Dutch military airports in recent weeks, but also at locations in Belgium, Denmark and Germany. Investigations are hampered by the lack of clues about the origin of the aircraft, which usually disappear after a short time.
Some European officials suspect that this is a form of Russia’s hybrid action aimed at countries that support Ukraine, but there is no concrete evidence for such claims. Moscow has repeatedly rejected such accusations.
