Drama off the coast of Morocco: American soldiers missing during an exercise

It is believed to be a hiking accident and no criminal activity is suspected. The incident is not related to a military exercise.

Members of the US Army have been confirmed missing, but their names have not yet been released.

The ground, air and naval forces of the Moroccan and American armies, as well as other participants in the African Lion exercise, are participating in the search. The exercise has been temporarily suspended to divert resources to the search.

Journalists reported hearing helicopters during the night, and in the morning planes, drones and other equipment were seen in the coastal area.

African Lion is the largest annual joint military exercise led by AFRICOM, bringing together thousands of troops from the US, African countries and NATO allies. This year, more than 7,000 people from over 30 countries are participating, with an emphasis on modern technologies such as drones and artificial intelligence.

The exercise takes place in the area where the Sahara meets the Atlantic Ocean, near the town of Tan Tan. Earlier, in 2012, two US Marines were killed in a helicopter crash during the same exercise.
