Luka Dončić will not play for the Slovenian national team in the summer qualifiers for the 2027 World Cup, the Slovenian basketball player confirmed via social media after his Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated from the NBA playoffs.
I love my daughters more than anything and they will always come first in my life. As I continue to fight for joint custody of my daughters, I was forced to make a difficult decision between representative trips and playing for the Slovenian national team and spending this summer with them. Unfortunately, it has been extremely difficult for me to see them in the last eight months. Representing Slovenia has always meant everything to me and I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to play for my country this summer. But right now, my daughters and obligations are what I have as a father my prioritywrote Dončić in a post on Instagram.
Due to injury, Dončić did not play in this year’s NBA playoffs.
Slovenia continues the qualification July 3rd visiting Estonia, while three days later they will host the Swedish national team in Ljubljana.
After four rounds, Slovenia is leading the group with three wins and one loss and is well on its way to qualifying for the 2027 World Cup, which will be played in Qatar from August 27 to September 12.
Slovenian media previously reported that Dončić and his long-term girlfriend partner Anamarija Goltes ended the relationship and they are fighting a legal dispute over custody of children and division of property.
