The bodies were discovered in Cumuto, about 40 kilometers from the capital Port of Spain on the island of Trinidad. It is not yet clear whether the case is linked to gang violence in the Caribbean nation, which has one of the highest homicide rates in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The police announced that five adults, four men and two women, had identification marks, and two bodies had autopsy marks, writes the BBC.
Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro said the discovery was “deeply disturbing”. “Any person or institution found to have violated their duty will bear full responsibility,” he said.
The state of emergency, which gives police expanded powers of search and arrest, was extended after being imposed on March 2.
The US State Department has since issued multiple travel warnings due to crime and an “increased risk of terrorism”.
“Although violent crime in Trinidad and Tobago has fallen significantly since 2024 thanks to security measures put in place during previous states of emergency, crime remains a challenge throughout the country,” one of the warnings said.
