After a two-week trial in Santa Monica, jurors found Cosby guilty of sexual assault and awarded him $17.5 million in past damages and $1.75 million in future damages, including “mental suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, anxiety, humiliation and emotional distress,” AP writes.
An additional $40 million in punitive damages was awarded in the second phase of the trial.
Cosby’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, has announced an appeal against the verdict. The decision comes nearly five years after Cosby was released from prison in Pennsylvania, when the state’s Supreme Court overturned his earlier criminal conviction.
– This verdict is not only about me, but that the truth will finally be heard and that Mr. Cosby will be held accountable – said Motsinger.
– I carried the burden of what happened to me for more than 50 years. Today, the jury saw the truth and that means everything – she added.
Motsinger alleged in a lawsuit filed in 2023 that Cosby invited her to his show, gave her wine and two pills she thought were aspirin, after which she passed out and woke up in her home partially naked.
Cosby did not testify at the trial. His lawyers argued that the charges were based on assumptions.
Cosby was previously convicted in Pennsylvania in 2018 of sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, but the conviction was overturned. More than 60 similar charges have been filed against him, which he denies.
