Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the truce between the US and Iran is “extremely fragile” and should be preserved. “We need to urgently prevent the continuation of the fighting and maintain the hard-won momentum of the truce,” Wang said in a conversation with his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar.
In separate talks with officials, Wang emphasized that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian ports “does not serve the common interests of the international community.” He called for the strengthening of diplomatic efforts and the achievement of a permanent solution through political negotiations.
“A permanent truce can only be achieved through political and diplomatic means,” he said.
During the conflict, China tries to present itself as a neutral side, although it maintains close relations with Iran, whose oil it imports to a large extent.
At the same time, US intelligence sources claim that Beijing is considering supplying new air defense systems to Iran, which China officially denies.
The US naval blockade of Iran came into effect today at 4 pm European time and includes the entire Iranian coast and traffic in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
The US military has warned that ships entering the area without permission could be intercepted or seized, while Iran has threatened retaliation, further raising the risk of an escalation of conflict in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s key oil shipping routes.
