China will buy at least $17 billion worth of U.S. agricultural products annually through 2028, in addition to existing commitments to buy soybeans, the White House said Sunday.
This announcement is one of the few concrete results of the summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, held last week in Beijing, which Trump announced back in March as a “monumental event,” writes Politico.
The new purchases build on soybean purchase commitments agreed after Trump and Xi reached a broader trade truce at a summit in Busan, South Korea, in October 2025.
As part of that agreement, China pledged to buy 25 million tons of American soybeans annually by 2028, while both countries halted further escalation of tariffs.
The White House also said China has renewed expired registrations for more than 400 US beef processing facilities and added new ones to the list.
At the same time, it is working with US regulators to lift suspensions for the remaining plants, a move aimed at making it easier for US farmers to access the Chinese market.
It is also reported that China has continued to import poultry from US states that the US Department of Agriculture has determined are free of bird flu.
According to a document published on Sunday, the two countries also agreed on Iran, concluding that Tehran must not acquire nuclear weapons, that the sea passage through the Strait of Hormuz must be reopened, and that no country or group should be allowed to charge for passage.
The US and China also agreed to establish a trade committee to manage trade in sensitive sectors, as well as an investment committee that, according to the White House, should provide an “intergovernmental forum” for discussions on investment-related issues.
China has also agreed to an initial purchase of 200 Boeing aircraft. According to the statement, Beijing will also deal with restrictions on the sale of equipment and technologies for the production and processing of rare earth metals, but no additional details have been released.
The new information came two days after Trump wrapped up a state visit to China, after which he told reporters that tariffs had not been discussed. That, however, contradicts a statement from China’s Ministry of Commerce on Saturday, which said the two sides had reached an agreement in principle to reduce certain tariffs. The Chinese Ministry also confirmed agreements on agriculture and airplanes, but without presenting specific figures.
As part of the summit, both sides “agreed to promote two-way trade, including agricultural products, through arrangements such as mutual reduction of tariffs on a range of products,” China’s Ministry of Commerce said.
The Chinese government has not yet confirmed all the details released by the White House on Sunday.
