Cheslin Kolbe has re-signed for his first club the Stormers, nine years after leaving the Cape Town outfit.
The Stormers did not reveal the length of the contract, but stated that Kolbe is part of their “Project 2029”.
– Cape Town and this team played a huge role in my life and career – said 32-year-old Kolbe, who grew up in that city.
“When I left, I always hoped that one day I would come back home and play for this team again. Now it means a lot to me and my family.”
In 2017, Kolbe moved to French Toulouse, and in 2021, he joined rival Toulon in the Top 14 league.
After two years in France, he moved to Japan where he played for Tokyo Sungoliath.
He is a two-time world champion with the South African national team and has won several major club trophies during his career in Europe.
Stormers director of rugby John Dobson said Kolbe was “an icon of the community and an inspiration to the fans”.
– As a player, he can do things on the field that no one else can – he added.
Kolbe will play alongside his South African teammates at the Stormers as the team prepares to defend their world title at the upcoming World Cup in Australia.
