Celebrations in Raqqa after the army took control of Kurdish forces

Hundreds of Syrians gathered in Raqqa’s Al-Naim Square on Sunday to celebrate a ceasefire agreement and the entry of government forces into the city’s province. Residents waved Syrian flags and set off fireworks, while others fired machine guns into the air.

The Syrian army has taken control of large parts of the country’s north, pushing Kurdish forces out of territory over which they have had effective autonomy for more than a decade.

The advance of the army came after the implementation of the March agreement, which aimed to integrate Kurdish forces into state structures, stalled.

Government forces pushed the Kurds out of two neighborhoods in Aleppo last week and took control of an area east of the city on Saturday. On Sunday, the government announced that it had captured the town of Tabqa in the Raka region.
