The Council of Ministers of Bulgaria on Thursday adopted a decision to open a Bulgarian consulate in Turkey, headed by an honorary consular officer, with headquarters in Izmir and a consular district covering the territories of the provinces of Izmir, Sakarya, Bilesik, Eskisehir, Kocaeli and Kutahya.
The functions of the honorary consul will be performed by Hasan Akgun, the Government Information Service reported.
In his capacity as an honorary consul, he will assist Bulgarian institutions and citizens in their relations with Turkish institutions, protect the interests of citizens of the sending country in the host country, and help establish lasting cooperative relations between educational and cultural actors in Bulgaria and Turkey.
Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey and one of the leading industrial, logistics and port centers in the country, oriented towards the Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean basin and European markets.
The city serves as a natural bridge between the Balkans, the Middle East and North Africa, making it the center of centuries-old coexistence of different ethnic and religious communities, reports BTA.
This diversity creates a favorable environment for the development of cultural diplomacy, educational exchanges and the promotion of Bulgarian culture, according to the press release.
