Healey briefed MPs in the House of Commons on the situation in the Middle East earlier today, giving further details of Britain’s military involvement in the region.
The Type 45 destroyer sailed from Portsmouth on March 11 to support the defense of RAF Akrotiri, which was hit by an Iranian-made drone earlier this month.
Speaking about the Strait of Hormuz, Healey said British military planners had been deployed to US Central Command, in line with a commitment made on Friday along with 29 other nations, to ensure safe navigation through the key maritime route.
He emphasized that the United Kingdom is determined to “play a leading role in securing the Strait of Hormuz.”
When it comes to supporting allies in the Gulf, Healey announced that the UK will soon deploy light multi-barrel missile systems to Bahrain.
It will also send to Kuwait the Rapid Sentry air defense system, which it claims has already proven very effective in shooting down drones in the region.
