Bosnia and Herzegovina currently has 20 protected food products, including Livan cheese, which has met the criteria and requirements of the European Union.
The Food Safety Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina has presented a catalog of food products with protected labels, in which the products in our country that are already protected or are in the process of protecting the designation of origin, geographical indication and guaranteed traditional specialty are consolidated, presented and documented.
The catalog contains details on the method of production, special characteristics of the product and the geographical area from which it originates. As announced, the goal of this publication is to additionally emphasize the richness of the gastronomic heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its importance in the contemporary social and economic context.
Director of the BiH Food Safety Agency dr. Sanin Tanković stated in the foreword that every region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, from the orchards of Herzegovina to the Bosnian pastures and the plains of Sember, bears a recognizable stamp of nature that can be felt in the taste and quality of local specialties. He also pointed out that the protection of traditional products opens up space for new markets and strengthens the competitiveness of domestic production.
Among the protected products, Livnja cheese stands out, which is registered in the register of geographical indications of the European Union, known as e-Ambrosia. In addition, three more food products from Bosnia and Herzegovina are currently in the process of registering the mark at the level of the European Union.
The Food Safety Agency of BiH states that this system was recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, which singled out Bosnia and Herzegovina among 80 European and Central Asian countries as a positive example of the so-called third countries in the establishment and functioning of the system of geographical indications for food products, writes RTV Slon.
