After the introduction of the new international weekend line Sarajevo – Ploče – Sarajevo, several more concrete steps are coming from the Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
BiH Minister of Communications and Transport Edin Forto supports the introduction of additional passenger lines and emphasizes that this can only be the beginning. With the support of both entity governments, the railways can raise the quality of life throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially around the urban centers of Sarajevo, Mostar, Banja Luka, Tuzla, Zenica and Bihać.
“In my talks with the World Bank, I am preparing a package for the Railways of the Federation of BiH in order to invest in infrastructure security, digitization and far greater efficiency of the internal operations of one of the largest companies in BiH. I have no doubt that the FBiH Government will accept this arrangement,” Forto said.
The new international line Sarajevo – Ploče operates on weekends as an extension of the Sarajevo – Čapljina route, confirming the demand from the summer season and providing citizens with a reliable connection to the Adriatic for most of the year.
FBiH Railways, in cooperation with cantonal and municipal level institutions, initiated the preparation of project documentation for the modernization of platforms and stops at 18 locations (Buća Potok, Alipašin Most, Ilidža, Hadžići…). The focus is on city and suburban traffic, i.e. better access, safer platforms and faster connection of suburban settlements with the center.
A modern, centralized ticket sales and distribution system (web, mobile application, partner sales points) is being prepared. The goal is to reduce queues, speed up shopping and get a more accurate insight into passenger flows in real time.
The intensification of tourist train traffic is planned: the route Sarajevo – Vareš, the extension of the Una route Martin Brod – Bihać – Bosanska Krupa through the NP Una and the new panoramic route Sarajevo – Konjic – Jablanica – Mostar. The railway becomes a tool for the development of internal tourism.
In cooperation with HŽ Putnički prijevost, it is planned to establish a direct line Sarajevo – Zagreb – Sarajevo at the end of 2026 (initially on weekends). This is an important step towards better integration of Bosnia and Herzegovina into the European railway network.
After three decades, oil transportation by rail has been re-established on the Ploče – Blažuj section, which brings a safer and more sustainable supply chain. Within the company Željeznica FBiH, the new Rulebook on work and Systematization of workplaces were adopted, which raises the professional standard and efficiency of services, the Ministry of Communications and Transport of BiH announced.
