Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said on Monday that direct talks with Israel are aimed at ending the conflict with Hezbollah, while accusing those who dragged Lebanon into war of “treason” in an implicit rebuke to the Iran-backed armed group.
– My goal is to achieve an end to the state of war with Israel, similar to the armistice agreement of 1949 – Aoun said in a statement, adding: “I assure you that I will not accept the achievement of a humiliating agreement.”
– Those who dragged us into the war in Lebanon now hold us responsible because we made a decision on negotiations. What we do is not treason. On the contrary, treason is committed by those who lead their country to war in order to achieve foreign interests – said the Lebanese leader, reports AFP.
