A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 hit the Sindirgi district in the Turkish province of Balikesir on Monday at 10:48 p.m., the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency of Turkey (AFAD) announced.
According to AFAD, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 5.99 kilometers and was felt throughout Istanbul, Yalova and surrounding provinces. Emergency services teams were immediately sent to the affected area, and so far there is no information about fatalities or serious injuries.
AFAD confirmed that three buildings collapsed after the earthquake in Sindirgi district. Two buildings were located on Akhisar Street, and one on Cumhuriyet Square. The two-story building on the square had three shops on the ground floor, while the upper floors served as storage space.

Authorities said two four-story buildings on Akhisar Street had previously been evacuated and sealed due to damage sustained during a previous earthquake of the same magnitude on August 10, and were slated for demolition.
In Yalova, citizens ran into the streets in panic when the earthquake was felt throughout the city. Many stayed outside during the night, using blankets to keep warm. So far, no serious damage or injuries have been reported in this province.
After the main quake, AFAD registered a series of aftershocks – magnitude 4.2 at 10:50 p.m., 4.0 at 10:51 p.m., and another magnitude 4.0 at 11:04 p.m. – that further unsettled residents of the region.
Crews on the ground are currently assessing the damage and the safety of buildings, and according to initial reports, several previously damaged and abandoned buildings collapsed during the tremors.
