Hegseth cited unspecified intelligence findings to justify the attack, saying the vessel was “passing through a known narcotics trafficking route and carrying narcotics.”
He did not specify where in the Caribbean the ship was when it was attacked.
“These narco-terrorists are bringing drugs to our shores to poison Americans at home – and they will not succeed. The Department will treat them EXACTLY as we treated Al Qaeda. We will continue to track them, map them, hunt them down, and kill them,” he announced.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly promised tough measures against drug cartels.
Saturday’s attack marks the 15th publicly known U.S. military attack on alleged drug-smuggling vessels since the Trump administration began operations in early September. A total of 64 people died in the attacks, which were carried out in the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean.
