Former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been named as his successor, Iranian state media announced.
Ali Khamenei was killed at the very beginning of the US-Israeli attacks on Iran.
His son Mojtaba Khamenei (56) is a cleric who has never held a public office and survived the military attacks on Iran.
The Supreme Leader in Iran’s political system has the final say on all key state issues. The choice of a successor was decided by the Council of Experts, a body that has 88 members, after Khamenei’s death.
In the meantime, after his death, a three-member temporary leadership of the state was formed, consisting of President Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Judiciary Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and cleric Alireza Arafi, head of the Basij paramilitary organization.
Khamenei has never publicly named his successor.
